Lead Chef Instructor – Job Description 

If you are an experienced culinary professional with a passion for teaching children, then Rooks to Cooks has a great opportunity for you. We are looking for fun and enthusiastic Lead Chefs to join our wonderful team of summer camp culinary instructors. Applicants must have hands-on experience working in the culinary industry, as well as, experience managing a team and working with children in a professional environment. As Lead Chef, you will be an integral part of a four-person team, managing all staff, campers, and day-to-day operations. You will lead multiple cooking demonstrations and lessons each day, as well as act as the parent liaison and the Rooks to Cooks ambassador for your location. Strong management and interpersonal skills are required and a comfortability conversing with others is integral to this role. You will also be responsible for building and maintaining a physically and emotionally safe environment, ensuring camp is a fun and positive experience for all your campers.

Hours of Work: Monday to Thursday 8:30am – 4:30pm, Fridays 8:30am – 8:00pm

Sous Chef Instructor – Job Description 

If you are a passionate culinary professional with an interest in teaching children, then Rooks to Cooks has a great opportunity for you. We are looking for fun and enthusiastic Sous Chefs to join our wonderful team of summer camp culinary instructors. Applicants must have hands-on experience working in the culinary industry, as well a comfortability working with children. As sous chef, you will be an integral part of a four-person team, working with the lead chef to help manage and educate the campers, while ensuring the day-to-day operations run smoothly. You will be responsible for managing the back end operations for the camp program in the form of managing and executing the mise en place preparations for all camper and chef recipes, and will support the lead chef in teaching multiple cooking demonstrations and lessons per day. Strong organizational, interpersonal skills and a comfortability conversing with others is integral to this role. You will also be responsible for building and maintaining a physically and emotionally safe environment, ensuring camp is a fun and positive experience for all your campers.

Hours of Work: Monday to Thursday 8:00am – 4:00pm, Fridays 8:00am – 7:00pm

Camp Counsellor – Job Description

If you are a high energy, motivated, positive, and caring person with a passion for working with children, then Rooks to Cooks has a great opportunity for you. We are looking for fun, enthusiastic and experienced Camp Counsellors to join our wonderful team of Summer camp culinary instructors. Applicants must have experience working with children in a professional or summer camp environment, as well as a passion for food and cooking. As Camp Counsellor, you will be an integral part of a four-person team, working with the lead chef and sous chef to provide guidance, oversee activities for campers, and perform many other valuable functions on the job. You will lead all the non-cooking related activities, such as, break time activities, games and team building exercises. As such, strong classroom management skills and a comfortability with leading large groups of children in an enthusiastic manner is integral to this role. You will also be responsible for building and maintaining a physically and emotionally safe environment, ensuring camp is a fun and positive experience for all your campers. In addition to your Camp Counsellor duties, you will also support the Kitchen Assistant in the end of day prep and closure routines, putting your cooking skills to good use.

Hours of Work: Monday to Thursday 8:45am – 4:45pm, Fridays 8:45am – 8:00pm

Camp Kitchen Assistant – Job Description 

Are you a dedicated and organized person who enjoys cooking? Do you have an affinity for cleaning, organizing and an comfortability working with children? If so, then Rooks to Cooks has a great opportunity for you. We are looking for mature, responsible and reliable Summer Camp Kitchen Assistants to join our wonderful team of summer camp culinary instructors. Applicants must have experience working in a professional kitchen environment, have an affinity for organization and cleanliness, and must enjoy working with children. As Kitchen Assistant, you will be an integral part of a four-person team, supporting the lead chef, sous chef and camp counsellor as they manage day-to-day camp operations. You are responsible for managing food inventory, washing dishes throughout the day, maintaining and ensuring that cleanliness expectations are met for your location, as well as monitoring the cooking processes of 4-5 daily recipes. You will also support the camp counsellor during break time by acting as an additional supervisor, ensuring your campers are safe and well cared for. At the end of the camp day you will take responsibility of the aftercare recipe prep, putting your cooking skills to good use, and the supervision of the aftercare campers.

Hours of Work: Monday to Thursdays 9:30am – 5:30pm, Fridays 9:30am – 8:00pm

CIT Program (Chef or Counsellor in Training) – Volunteer Position 

We are looking for mature, hardworking and enthusiastic CITs to join our wonderful summer camp teams. Our CIT program is developed first and foremost as a means to provide invaluable work experience to eager individuals with an interest in working with children and or food. Since our program is multifaceted in nature, we offer our CITs two options for involvement: a chef strain or counsellor strain. 

Chefs in Training will work directly under the kitchen assistant gaining valuable skills and experiences related to the culinary industry. 

Position duties are as follows:

  • Assist with the preparation of student and demo mise en place (pre-measured ingredients for recipes) 
  • Assist with receiving and organizing food inventory  
  • Assist with the cooking and finishing of student recipes (in the oven)
  • Act as additional supervision for students during recipe execution and break time 
  • Assist with the maintenance of space cleanliness and organization (dish washing, sweeping, mopping, re-organization of materials)  

Soft and Hard Skills Developed: 

  • Foundational cooking skills 
  • Organizational skills

  • Efficiency  
  • Large batch recipe execution 
  • Kitchen etiquette & food safety 
  • How to engage with youth of various ages and skill levels 

Counsellors in Training will work directly under the counsellor gaining valuable skills and experiences related to childcare and education.

Position duties are as follows:

  • Assist with the planning and execution of break time games and activities 
  • Act as additional supervision for students during recipe execution and break time 
  • Help facilitate efficient transitions between break times 
  • Assist with the enforcement of our hydration policy (ensuring campers are well hydrated throughout the day) 
  • Provide mentorship and support to campers 
  • Assist with the maintenance of space cleanliness and organization (dish washing, sweeping, mopping, re-organization of materials) 
  • When needed, assist with the preparation of student and demo mise en place (pre-measured ingredients for recipes)

At the time of hiring, candidates will have the chance to express the skills and experiences they would like to gain, and a strain will be selected that best aligns with their goals.

Volunteers must be at least 2 years older than the sessions assigned, and be able to commit to at least 2 consecutive weeks working full time hours.

Volunteers over the age of 18 must conduct a vulnerable sectors screening prior to attendance.
