Chef Instructor’s Bio

Chef Helena
Education:

My obsession with kids and food began when I was in university, hungry for knowledge on how children process information and engage with the world during this pivotal stage. Armed with a BA in Psychology focusing on Early Childhood Development from the University of Guelph, I then finessed my technical skills earning my Chef’s Training Certification from one of the city’s best hospitality institutions, George Brown College.

Cooking Style:

My teaching style is recreational yet educational, with the aim to use food to stimulate the five senses and educate students to understand what they are tasting. Food is no fun if you don’t know how to eat! and when I say eat I don’t just mean gustation. I mean the whole experience around that moment of food. Whether it is alone, with your family, around your friends, in a sea of strangers, a farm, a boutique, a grocery store.. anywhere! Any sort of experience with food has an affect on your memories and opinion about it.

Experiences:

For several years, I have been a cook for one of Toronto’s leading hospitality groups, which include restaurants such as Canoe and Jump. With a strong focus on classic techniques yet modern ideas, Canadian ingredients, and outstanding plating, being a part of a chef-driven group has had a strong impact on my love for food. My favourite job in the kitchen is butchery, and I am always cooking Korean food when I am at home!

About me:

I am also a videographer! I always have my Canon G7X camera on me, and my favourite thing to shoot is food in action! Whether I can catch a shot of someone rolling out pasta, or taking an impossibly big bite of food, I am always finding inspiration and creative ways to make fun food-themed videos.

Chef’s Mission:
I am truly passionate about teaching kids how to build a healthy relationship with food, developing activities that stimulate both their minds and appetites through food-centric activities with discussions using kitchen-appropriate vocabulary.
