Rooks to Cooks Virtual Academy – COOKS

Our founder and CEO, Chef Shai Mandel, professional chef and certified teacher, is putting her teaching training to good use through the development of our amazing academy programs. In listening to our families and taking note of their challenges, wants and needs in today’s climate, Chef Shai has developed these programs with YOU in mind. 

Whether you have chosen to homeschool and are seeking a day time program that helps supplement and teach the day-to-day curriculum, are simply looking for a fun and engaging way to keep your children busy after school or are exploring a way to incorporate programming on the weekends, Rooks to Cooks has just the program for you. 

In order for your child to receive the absolute best education, attention and supervision, we have capped our programs to ONLY 8 students per class! They will have the chance to work with one of our experienced and passionate chef instructors LIVE on Zoom as they slice and dice their way through their program’s recipes. 

In the pursuit of promoting independence, self-sufficiency and encouraging our students to take an active role in supporting the family unit, all programs will include prep time! Simply pull out all the necessary ingredients and equipment prior to class, and your child will be ready to get cooking. 

To ensure our programs are inclusive to all dietary needs and allergies, nut-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, and egg-free substitutions have been proactively listed for all recipes when possible. If you have a conflict not listed, no worries, please reach out and we will find a way to accommodate. 

All recipes yield 4 servings making these classes optimal for family meal prep!  

All recipes have vegetarian alternatives. Gluten free and vegan alternatives available upon request.

 

PROGRAM INCLUDES

  • 1:8 Chef to student ratio
  • Digital recipe booklet
  • Recipies, equipment needs and set up instructions sent after registration
  • Little to no need for parental supervision

NEW! Our classes have now been divided up by skill level: Cooks OR Rooks.

  • “Cooks”(8+) refers to children with previous cooking experience and skills who want to take their skills to the next level.
  • “Rooks”(7+) refers to children who are “rookies” and new to cooking.

Our Cooks group will focus on building on their current foundation of knowledge and skill, cooking through the recipes at a faster pace than in the Rooks group making room for slightly more challenging renditions of the same recipes. Our Cooks group will learn the “why’s” behind the cooking processes, expand their knowledge, build even more skills, and have a blast in the process. 

Minimum age requirements for Cooks is 8+. Interested students under the age requirements must connect with our offices prior to enrollment.

Brilliant Bakers Cooks – MONDAYS (Ages 9+)

We want to help bring math out of the classroom and into our kitchens in the tastiest way we know how. Join us for Brilliant Bakers! This hands-on baking course will not only equip your child with industry tested pastry knowledge and skills, they will also gain real world applications of mathematics and numeracy!

Our Brilliant Bakers program is designed to engage your young pastry chef’s mind while supplementing  what they’re learning in school with real world applications of math. Along with the teaching of top notch pastry recipes, we’ll practice and apply mental math, fractions, portions and measurements in the most delicious of ways. Your little chefs won’t even know they’re learning!

Brilliant Bakers was written using REAL Ontario curriculum guidelines to help your child learn hands-on baking skills, while socializing with new friends AND secretly applying academic knowledge while learning from home.

It is a fun after school program designed to teach our students fundamental life and cooking skills, AND makes for a fantastic opportunity to get dinner prep completed by none other than your budding chef! Each class your child will learn to create a nutritious and delicious meal to be proud of, which will be completed just in time for dinner time! Our Chef will be there every step of the way to guide your child, answer any questions, and be there for support as they learn these new skills. Our Foods of the World course is designed to teach our students fundamental life and cooking skills while introducing them to new foods and flavours from around the world. Together we will explore up to 4 different cultures and cuisines, and learn more about the history and geography which has contributed to the recipes they create. While we travel around the world with our recipes, we’ll be using pantry staples and unique blends of ingredients and spices to bring these dishes to life. Together with our chef instructor, your child will expand their global knowledge, engage in discussions about the food we’re making and its origins, and, of course, take their skills to the next level.

Inspired by our popular YouTube show, The Lunch Club, our newest virtual program Lunch Prep is your child’s ticket to mastering the foundations and preparation of lunch foods! Imagine a world where your child not only prepares lunch for themselves, but for you too!! Participating in this program is one step closer to achieving that dream! Each week our exclusive Lunch Prep students will come together to learn and prepare new nutritious and delicious lunch recipes that will not only be the talk of the town in the cafeteria but, more importantly, will inspire and encourage independence and self-sufficiency. At the end of each class, your child will have prepared a gourmet lunch they can pack up and take with them the next day … and ticking one less chore off your to-do list and empowering your child. What better way to keep them busy, engaged and well fed, than with our most innovative and delicious program yet!?
